How Do I Reduce Bruising After Filler?

Nearly all the control you have over this is exercised before you arrive. Once a vessel has been nicked — your options narrow to managing what happens next.

This page is therefore weighted heavily towards preparation, which is the straightforward half anyway.

A woman with her eyes closed holds a cloth-wrapped bag of frozen peas against her cheek.

The week before

Pause the blood-thinning supplements, roughly seven days out. Fish oil, vitamin E at supplement doses, ginkgo, ginseng, garlic tablets, high-dose turmeric. These are the ones most often implicated and the ones people most often forget they take.

Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories taken casually. Paracetamol doesn't interfere and covers most of what you'd have used them for.

Do not stop a prescribed anticoagulant. That decision belongs to the doctor who prescribed it, arranged in advance, and nobody in a treatment room has the standing to overrule them.

Skip alcohol the night before, and ideally for two nights. This makes more difference than most people expect.

Time it against your cycle if bruising is a recurring problem for you; many people find they mark more easily in the days before a period.

And arrive hydrated. Dehydrated tissue is less forgiving.

On the day, and straight afterwards

Ask for cold before and after. Most practices do this as standard.

Keep pressure on any point that's bleeding for longer than feels necessary. A full minute is better than a polite ten seconds.

Sit upright for the rest of the day and sleep with your head slightly raised that night.

Leave the gym alone until tomorrow. Raised blood pressure into freshly injured tissue is exactly what you're trying to avoid.

No heat: no sauna, no steam, no long hot shower with your face in it.

Arnica, oral or topical, is commonly recommended and the evidence for it is thin. It's unlikely to do harm. Don't let it replace anything above.

What the timeline looks like

Day one to two, the bruise appears and often darkens. It usually looks worse on the second morning than it did when you left, which is normal and catches people out.

Day three to five, colour shifts through purple towards green.

Day five to ten, it fades to yellow-brown and then goes.

Lips and the under-eye area bruise most readily and take longest to clear, because the skin is thin and there's nowhere for the blood to go. Two weeks is not unusual there.

Makeup can go over it after the first day, and a colour corrector does more than concealer alone.

Cannulas produce less bruising than needles in many areas, which is a reasonable thing to ask about if you're prone to it.

When it isn't just a bruise

A bruise is uncomfortable and dull. It does not hurt sharply, it does not worsen hour by hour, and it does not come with a patch of skin that has gone white, grey or mottled.

Pain out of proportion to what was done, colour that drains and stays drained, or skin that feels cold to the touch are the signs of a vascular occlusion, and that is an immediate phone call rather than a wait-and-see. Any visual disturbance is a hospital, not a clinic.

Knowing that distinction is worth more than every bruise-prevention tip on this page.

The part that actually decides it

Technique and anatomy. An injector who works slowly, uses a cannula where it's appropriate, and knows the vascular map of the area you're treating will bruise you less than one who doesn't, and no amount of arnica closes that gap.

So the real preventive measure is the same as it is everywhere else here: choose the person carefully, tell them you bruise easily, and ask what they'd do differently because of it.

Finally, book it against a realistic calendar. If something visible is coming up, allow a fortnight rather than a long weekend. ABC7's West New York pages are a quick check on what's on locally, and municipal listings through the Town of West New York cover the civic side of the same question.

If you'd rather read the trial data on arnica and bruising than accept a one-line verdict that it's thin, the West New York Free Public Library System will get you to it.
